El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, known for his support of Bitcoin, has secured re-election.

Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador known for his favorable stance on Bitcoin, has secured another term in office, according to exit polls released shortly after voting concluded on Sunday. Bukele’s victory was anticipated, given his significant popularity in the country and his commanding lead in pre-election surveys.

“According to our calculations, we have emerged victorious in the presidential election with over 85% of the votes and a projected 58 out of 60 seats in the Assembly,” Bukele announced via Twitter.

During his initial tenure, Bukele gained attention for his tough approach to combating gang violence through large-scale arrests and for his embrace of Bitcoin (BTC). In 2021, El Salvador made history by becoming the first country to officially adopt Bitcoin as legal tender.

Additionally, the nation introduced the Chivo crypto wallet to promote Bitcoin usage and began investing in the asset. While praised by Bitcoin enthusiasts, these actions attracted criticism from international bodies like the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
