Saudi Arabia Introduces Metaverse Initiative to Showcase Cultural Heritage

The government of Saudi Arabia has rolled out a metaverse platform to exhibit the country’s rich cultural heritage, encompassing its history, arts, and crafts.

Recently announced by the Saudi Press Agency, the launch of this metaverse initiative is backed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative Media Intelligence.

Saudi’s latest venture into the metaverse realm allows users to delve into the nation’s cultural legacy through digital avenues by engaging in simulated activities.

In a bid to construct faster and more immersive virtual worlds, Saudi authorities collaborated with droppGroup and droppPhygical, employing HyperLedger Fabric 2.5 blockchain technology to enhance the metaverse experience.

This platform invites users to immerse themselves in the country’s heritage, transcending traditional touring markets, as they explore historical sites through digital renditions.

Leveraging Web3 models, a global audience can now partake in this cultural heritage, capitalizing on the continued adoption of digital technologies in the region.

Commemorating Saudi Arabia’s Founding Day with the Metaverse

As part of the initiative, cultural shows, music, dance, and crafts events will be incorporated. Notably, the history walk, engaging games, and other activities are significant highlights of this release.

The Saudi Arabia Founding Day event, which delves into the country’s history dating back to 1727, was live-streamed on the Metaverse platform.

“This cross-platform compatibility underscores the Ministry of Culture’s dedication to inclusivity, allowing a diverse global audience to explore and engage with the rich history of Saudi culture.”

Accessible via various devices such as laptops, Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, and mobile phones, the metaverse promises an immersive experience for all.

Middle East’s Web3 Strategy Attracts New Ventures

Saudi Arabia has been actively exploring digital alternatives to diversify economic sources and stimulate Web3 growth.

Last year, the country reportedly invested $50 million in metaverse firm Animoca as part of its plans to establish itself as a blockchain hub in the region.

NEOM, a prominent project in Saudi Arabia, partnered with Animoca to spearhead digital initiatives. The partnership involved a $25 million investment in convertible notes and another $25 million used to purchase shares in the metaverse firm.

Majid Mufti, CEO of NEOM Investment Fund, praised the partnership for bringing the necessary Web3 architecture to the forefront.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Animoca Brands to support the development of Neom’s digital infrastructure. Web3 technology and infrastructure development will not only be an important foundation of Neom’s tech stack and architecture but also have the potential to revolutionize global industries.”

The Middle East has witnessed significant investment in Web3 since the beginning of 2023, with major jurisdictions vying to become the Web3 hub for digital investments in the region.

Dubai, for instance, has seen a surge in Web3-based firms entering its local market after launching a plan to provide firms with a 90% license subsidy. Additionally, the region awarded a web3 license to the AYA platform, a crypto-friendly firm supporting conservation and nature credits.
